Research interests
My research seeks to lay the foundation for the domestication of the wild sunflower relative Silphium integrifolium (rosinweed or silfower) for use as a perennial oilseed crop. My main goals are: 1) To survey trait diversity in the species by evaluating a diverse population in locations ranging from Texas to northern Minnesota. 2) To use this population to understand the genomic regions which control variation for important traits. 3) To describe the effect of inbreeding in S. integrifolium, and to better understand the way that self-incompatibility is controlled in the species. I am also working to help develop genomic resources to support further breeding and research aims, and to develop breeding populations and protocols for the species.
